The 4 BPD Subtypes

There are 4 subtypes of BPD, but it's important to note that the subtypes are not recognized in the DSM-5. Someone may fit under 1 subtype, while others may identify with 2 or more, or may be one type at one time, then another subtype at a different time. The 4 subtypes of BPD are:

Discouraged or Quiet Borderline-

*They internalize all their emotions

*They seem to function well, to others

*They blame themselves

*They mentally retreat- dissociate

*They beat themselves up and self-sabotage

*They are afraid of emotional intimacy

*They direct their rage internally

*They have a higher rate of self-harm

*They shut down and fear abandonment

Self-Destructive Borderline:

*A lot of self-hatred

*They come across as moody

*They are dependent on others for emotional stability

*They self-harm in many ways including drugs and alcohol

*They self-sabotage because they don't think they are worthy

Petulant Borderline-

*Needs other people to help them soothe

*Come off as jealous, angry or overprotective

*Push/Pull relationships, Ultimatums

*They test people to see if they will abandon them

*Alcohol or drug use

Impulsive Borderline-

*Charismatic, maybe flirtatious

*High energy, gets bored easily

*Thrill seeking

*Prone to risky behaviors without thinking of the consequences

*They self-harm, people often feel they are being dramatic

*They are impulsive in several areas

*May have no concern for laws/norms

*Goes to great lengths for validation

These subtypes one can fall under one type- such as a Quiet Borderline as a child and teen, because it doesn't feel safe to let the rage out, so you turn it inward as a way to survive. Then as an adult, living in your own home, you may feel safe to begin to display that rage outward. They may stop blending in, and be unable to perform the way they did as a child. They may engage in maladaptive coping measures like alcohol or substance abuse or become impulsive or destructive. We evolve as our life goes on and are able to learn skills to somewhat reverse these symptoms. It takes a lot of time to learn these skills and begin applying them to your life.
